Spanish pioneer Francisco Cabañas registered the oldes Cuban cigar brand on the Cuban island in 1810, when the Cuban tobacco monopoly was still running. In the year 1895 he joined other cigar manufacturers to develop a brand new Cuban cigar trademark: Hija de Cabañas y Carbajal y Cía.
Cabanas is the oldest name in the history of cigars in Cuba.
Nowadays the Cabañas cigars are full flavored Cuban cigars, all in machine-made or machine-bunched with a hand-finished cigar styles using leaves from the Vuelta Abajo region that are not suitable for "totalmente a mano, tripa larga" (totally hand-made, long filler) Cuban cigars.
The Cabanas brand was discontinued in the year 1962 and reintroduced in 1989. After being reintroduced it was a Habanos Local brand that comprised full strength Cuban cigars, using long filler tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo region. This Cuban cigar brand was deleted from the Habanos portfolio in 2005.
There is a non-Cuban brand with the same name.
