Most of the leaves are cured in the traditional "Casas de tabaco", which depend entirely on the natural effects of the Cuban climate. The harvested leaves are tied together in pairs with a string and they are hung to rest.
While the leaves cure, they are go up from the lower to the higher parts of the "Casa de tabaco". Ventilation and light are constantly adjusted, which gives the curing leaves the natural temperature and humidity variations that they need.
In the 1990's, the Cuban cigar industry underwent a major investment in modernizing the temperature and humidity control of the curing process of the precious wrapper leaves. Now the wrapper leaves are cured under optimum conditions with no unpredictable factors that might damage the product. This process shortens curing time, but the leaves are still being watched and conditions adjusted while the wrappers cure, which is now a process that runs day and night with modern techniques.
