Cigar Review

The H. Upmann Petit H Upmann have the characteristic Upmann taste. Honey sweetness and bean flavours. This is a very pleasant Cuban cigar when young but, anyway, at least two years old recommended. Strength 2/5. These Petit H Upmanns were discontinued in 2002.

In 1844, Mr. Herman Upmann, who was a banker from Germany started using special imprinted cigar boxes for his firm as a type of promotion, which proved to be a successful advertizing technique. So the H. Upmann cigar brand was born and continues producing excellent Cuban cigars to this day.

The success of the Upmann cigar brand was buoyed by being awarded seven gold medals in seven international Cuban cigar exhibitions between 1862 and 1893; these awards still adorn the lithographed interior of the Upmann cigar box today.

The Upmann cigar brand was sold to the British firm of J. Frankau in 1922 and afterwards to Menendez, Garcia & Cia. in 1935. Production of H Upmann cigars continues today in the H. Upmann cigar factory, now known as Jose Marti.

H. Upmann cigars are available in a stunning range of handmade and machine-made cigar sizes. The biggest part of the Upmann brand offers mild to medium bodied cigars.

The origin of the name H. Upmann is in the letter "H", first one of the Spanish word hermanos (brothers), and the last name Hupmann, of which they eliminated the "H" to avoid repetition.

H. Upmann was an innovative cigar brand. They were one of the first Cuban cigar companies to use cedar boxes to store and transport their cigars, which permits conservation and keeps the cigars fresh and makes them maintain humidity. Another new aspect was the introduction of the aluminium tubes to preserve the Cuban cigars. The H. Upmann cigars were very famous in Germany, were they were served on silver plates.

H Upmann cigars are now commercialized mainly in Spain, Canada, Great Britain, the Far East, Swiss, Mexico, Africa and the Middle East. These Cuban cigars are made with tobacco from Vuelta Abajo, (Pinar del Rio). The mature cigar wrapper reinforces the Upmann cigar flavour and aroma; and provides them of a sweet and spicy touch.

H. Upmann presents around 40 cigar models, many of them machine-made. The larger vitolas are outstanding, specially two churchills: H. Upmann Sir Wiston and H. Upmann Monarcas (undressed or in aluminium tubes); they also offer the light models as the Connaisseur No.1 (robusto) and Cristales (corona). These last Cuban cigars are presented in crystal tubes. Many of the vitolas coincide with the brands of Montecristo.
